Artist Statement
If my paintings have a mission, it is this: to have an emotional impact on the viewer. My art subjects are trees, flora, mountains, and seascapes from extraordinary vantage points, with a focus on balancing shape, edge, value and warm/cool relationships. I’m drawn to vibrant colors and dynamic compositions that are representative with a tendency towards abstraction.
Painting is a solitary process, and I enjoy becoming lost in it. While painting, I listen to music, and talk to the painting if it’s not cooperating. I begin my paintings with abstract shapes, working dark to light, rather than from a detailed sketch. I concentrate on painting the light, not the subject matter.
I prefer oil paints as they allow me flexibility and a wide range of colors and techniques to create rich color and depth. Working wet on wet is my first preference; however, glazing is also one of my favorite techniques.
